Travel Diary		November 30, 2002 Atlanta, GA < Previous     Next > Thanksgiving has come and gone. We had a great time visiting with the Pete's family and were able to pause and give thanks for the good fortune that has enabled our adventure. We spent the past couple of days exploring Atlanta. We've decided that it's very similar to Seattle, but with less surrounding water, and better weather. There are great restaurants, interesting neighborhoods, and shopping of every variety. There are also great museums, large parks, a zoo, and even an aquarium that's just being built. One Atlanta landmark is the Varsity drive-in. We're told that the Varsity is the highest revenue-grossing restaurant in Atlanta, and also the largest server of Coke products in the country. Apparently they are always busy given their historical fame, and their proximity to the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology, a.k.a. Georgia Tech. The menu is classic drive-in food. Pete had a chili dog and a slaw dog with fries and a Coke. Mary had a double cheeseburger, onion rings and a Coke. It was quite an experience. We went to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History with the Bakers. They have an exhibit of dinosaur eggs that were discovered that had dinosaur embryos inside them. Finally, we were pleased to see the work of Seattle's Dale Chihuly here in Atlanta. If you've been following along with our travel diary, you'll recall we saw a Chihuly exhibit in Chicago in September. Here in Atlanta we found a neat building in Buckhead that had a large and dramatic Chihuly sculpture in the lobby. We're headed to Americus, Georgia to have a longer visit with Pete's sister's family, and we've got our eye on a few beaches in Florida where we might spend Christmas. << Back to Travel Diary < Previous     Next >
